Nail Tech Spotlight Jordanna Kissoon-Carr

This month we’re shining the Nail Tech Spotlight on Jordanna Kissoon-Carr (@pooch1creates), a talented nail artist, educator, and mentor known for her classic style, calm energy, and honest advice. A familiar face in the HONA community, Jordanna brings connection and confidence to everything she does.

From mentoring techs on content creation to setting boundaries in her own business, Jordanna is all about creating a career that works for you.

“I always tell techs to just film their first or last client of the day. That alone gives you three bits of content. Keep it simple.”

She’s proof that success doesn’t mean doing it all, it means doing what matters to you. In this spotlight, she opens up about burnout, building structure into her week, and the advice she’d give her younger self:

“There will be days when your books aren’t full or you don’t feel motivated. Just remember, every day is a new chance to grow, learn, and be proud that you even started.”

If you’ve been craving clarity, calm, or just a reminder that you’re doing enough, this one’s for you.

Q&A WITH JORDANNA KISSOON-CAR

Join us as we sit down with Jordanna for an open and inspiring Q&A, where she shares her journey, her go-to advice, and how she keeps things real in the nail world.

Q: If you could describe your style as a nail artist in 3 words, what would they be?

A: My style as a nail artist would definitely be classic, relaxed and trendy.

Q: You’ve been part of the HONA community for a while now! What do you think sets it apart from other brands or groups in the industry?

A: For me, family is really important. HONA is just that, a family that creates opportunities, shows care and just instantly brings people together. It is a brand that in my opinion, is always there to support. I love that because no matter what I never feel afraid to ask for help.

Q: We talk a lot about ‘nail tech burnout’, especially for those doing it all. How do you balance being a tech, mentor, content creator, and still find time for yourself?

A: To be honest, I think the main thing is setting boundaries and keeping them. Giving yourself time in your week to switch off without feeling guilty for it. We create such amazing connections with people we barley know, who then become friends after a while and sometimes after this has been made, we let our boundaries slip.

When I became self employed and sat with myself in December, I looked at my diary and thought what will work for me and what do I want my work life balance to look like. I scheduled in a early friday finish and made sure i cut my weekends down to one a month. Since doing this it has created a routine that gives me freedom in my working week and has given me more time to focus on myself and my mental wellbeing. Setting aside time in the week to focus on content, even if its for an hour really helps avoid the burnout we get, thinking we have to do everything at once.

My advice would be to get out for at least a walk a day, look at your diary and where you have gaps focus on the admin you need to get done and i live by the saying "one thing at a time".

Q: You meet so many nail techs through your content experience. What’s one common challenge you see techs facing right now and how do you help them overcome it?

A: One common challenge i see when teaching the content experience is, finding the time. I think alot of nail tech think they have to film and capture content of every single client. I explain that this is not the case. To ensure the pressure is off, I always advise to film either your first client of the day or your last client. This allows you to film, prep, base application and colour or nail art application. This has already created three types of content and allows for multiple posting in the week. This lessens the load that everyone has on their shoulders and creates a soft and easy routine to keep by just focusing on one client a week. This comes under my series planning and is a real popular topic which i really enjoy teaching.

Q: And finally… if you could give your younger self one piece of nail tech advice—what would it be?

A: There will be hard day, days where you feel you arent where everyone else seems to be, days where your books wont be full and days where you wont feel as motivated. Just remember everyday is a new day and a new day to learn, grow and be proud that you even started.
